This forest preserve consists of 241 acres of “woodlands, savannas and wetlands . . . among the highest quality natural areas within the Calumet Open Space Preserve.
The presence of existing natural areas, with basic native species intact, is a boon to this region where there are great quantities of open space but [unlike Eggers] most are in degraded condition.” (Chicago Habitat Directory 2005, p. 54)
Its rich variety of wild flowers includes May Apples, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, and Wild Geranium. Eggers is also home to a rare find: the Sassafrass Tree. It is ideal for hiking and bird-watching, and links the Burnham Greenway to trails in Northwest Indiana.
