South Chicago People’s Park, 9100 S. Buffalo Avenue

In memory of children killed in a tragic accident on the site, this three-city-lot space was given a major cleanup in 1997. Three years and about 3,000 hours of resident volunteer time later, 20 cubic yards of garbage and debris had been removed from the site.
Today, it is a community gathering place with trees, flowers, a stage, decorative benches, and a mosaic mural created by local youth.
It is an award-winning garden, managed by Claretian Associates, and a testimonial to what concerned residents can do for their community.
